Mid Kent Growers were delighted that they won so many of the coveted awards at this years National Fruit Show. The event that takes place at the Kent Showground in Detling is the showcase event for the industry.  Several of  themembers of Mid Kent Growers entered their best fruit, which forms part of a hard fought competition that sees only the best fruit receiving prizes.

Bardsley & Son won a show stopping 18 prizes, with their Bramley’s sweeping the board.  They also won an award for the best exhibit of pears as well as the Winch Memorial Challenge Cup for the highest number of points for a Weald of Kent exhibitor.

Ken Jenner

S Jenner & Sons

S Jenner & Sons also won a number of prizes for the new variety Rubens.  This crisp apple has been planted over the last few years and has proved extremely popular with the public.  Ken and David Jenner won six prizes in total and won the sort after Covent Garden Prize for best in Show.

AR Neaves & Son were delighted that they were awarded the ‘Tastiest Apple’ accolade with their Rubens variety.  The judging which takes place at the show sees a panel of experts taste all the entries in the dessert apple classes and pick the very best for the title of ‘Tastiest Apple’.  This new variety which also won best in show will prove to be a firm favourite when it becomes widely available to the public.

E & P Nicholls

In the Cobnut class, another Mid Kent Grower, Ernie Nicholls won the best entry of Kentish Cobnuts and the John Bardsley Tankard for the Cobnuts with the highest points.  Ernie has been growing Cobnuts on his farm for many decades and is enjoying the renewed interest in this versatile fruit.
