MKG scoop top awards at National Fruit Show!

Friday, October 18th, 2013

It was another great success for Mid Kent Growers at the National Fruit Show this week. John Evans (JA Colthup and Partners) won the prize for his Cameo apples, Peter Nicholls won the cobnuts and Bardsley Farms won the Conference pears class.

Additionally, our Rubens variety won the Tastiest Apple competition for the third time in four years, so there’s even more reason to keep an eye out for this in the supermarkets. The first consignments should be on the shelves now.

These awards represent the very best of commercial fruit production, and confirm that when it comes to quality and innovation, Mid Kent Growers are leading the way!

Rubens – Mid Kent Growers’ flagship variety and three times winner of Britain’s Tastiest Apple at the National Fruit Show – is in the supermarkets now, so look out for it on your local shelves.

This wonderful apple has extraordinary flavour and a great texture, and once bitten, you will be forever smitten!

Russet time

Friday, October 4th, 2013

Despite the need to dodge the showers (the meteorological ones, not the domestic variety), harvest is progressing at a rate of knots as we strive to get everything picked in the peak of condition.

Alongside second pick Cox (generally destined for immediate marketing due to their natural ripeness), we’re into Spartan in a small way and Russet in a major way.

Spartan is pretty recognisable as it has a deep crimson appearance with a natural bloom – it looks and tastes lovely, with a crisp and juicy texture.

Russets are something else altogether, and we’re supplying them now to supermarkets and greengrocers across the UK. A firm, dense apple with a distinct flavour. Its wonderful russeted skin makes it easier than anything to spot on the shelves, so make sure you get some in your trolley when you see it!
